I just signed up to do Neighborhood Emergency Response Team training on the first 3 Saturdays in March in Noe Valley. Anyone want to join me?
I already have a hard hat - actually, I have two - from prior emergency training in other cities so I'm off to a good start.
fantastic sunset 2006
the colors were much more intense. I need a better cameraphone.
Argh! Bloody Treo 600 can't do the colors justice at all. These were brilliant pinks heading into oranges.
still not the brilliant colors, but at least not so washed out
This is the closest my camera could get to the amazing colors. Imagine this with lots of pinks going on. (The Treo 600 seems to be biased away from red tones, alas)

Four Things 2006
Four jobs I've had:
1. Babe In The Box (ticket taker at a nightclub)
2. Bookstore Owner
3. The Person Who Transcribes Your Tax Form Into The Computer
4. Customer Service Representative
Four movies I can watch over and over:
1. The American Astronaut
2. Kind Hearts & Coronets
3. Seven Samurai
(all black & white, oddly)
The three places I've lived:
1. Northern California
2. Honolulu, Hawaii
3. Lampeter, Wales
and one place I'd like to live, at least for a while, someday:
Four TV shows I love:
1. The Daily Show (except I rarely see it)
2. Monty Python*
3. Kids in the Hall*
(*This being an indicator of when I actually used to watch much tv. Now I just catch the good stuff on DVD. Thank you, Netflix!)
Four places I've vacationed:
Four of my favorite dishes:
1. Negihama (hamachi (yellowtail) and green onion sushi)
2. Saag Paneer (Indian spinach stew with cheese)
3. A big platter of Ethiopian stews & injera bread
4. something I cooked myself that came out tasting good
Four sites I visit daily:
1. Flickr contacts page
2. LiveJournal friends page
3. Daily Oliver (& Hugo)
Four places I would rather be right now:
(this is really tough; I'm in my wonderful bed in my delightful apartment in San Francisco)
1. London (2nd favorite city)
2. New Zealand (never been)
3. my parents' place in Mendocino county (always relaxing)
4. laughing over dessert at the end of a great date
And then I'm supposed to tag someone else to write theirs but since no one tagged me, just do it if ya wanna.
Friday's lunch 2006
Time for a new phone 2006
Okay I am just fed up with the photo quality of my Treo 600. I have Sprint, but might consider jumping ship. Required features of new phone & service plan: good camera, ability to mail to Flickr, SMS, voicemail.
Oh and sometimes I talk on the phone but for a comically low number of minutes per month, so I want the ability to lower my costs with a low allotment of minutes.
Golden chantrelle mushrooms 2006
My thai lunch had Weebl or maybe Bob on it 2006
Black chantrelles 2006
Last time I went out of town and let my folks have a free weekend in the city, I came back and had freshly sharpened knives. This time, 3 bags of fresh wild mushrooms.
Step 1. chop the black chantrelles into about 1/2 inch strips
cooking mushrooms. Add mushroom & a little bit of chopped parsley to the garlicky butter and stir it around. Cook on medium heat until mushrooms start to absorb liquid. Add DRY vermouth (I dunno, 1/4 inch deep in the pan? 1/2 inch?), pinch of fleur de sel, some grinds of black pepper. Stir. Cover and simmer on lower heat until mushroom softens.
cooking polenta. Put some of the Fat of Love (a.k.a. Niman Ranch bacon grease) into the fry pan. Just a little bit, about 3/4 of a teaspoon. Oil the bottom with it. Put slices of polenta in there. Heat 'em up on both sides nice.
Black trumpet mushrooms on polenta. Just spoon up some of the mushrooms with their juice onto the polenta rounds.
The first mouthful is pure heaven. This may be one of the best dishes I've ever cooked. Which is funny because I just wanted to do something quick because i'm tired from my trip. Glad I didn't have hot dogs as I'd first contemplated.

Groggy greyer San Antonio 2006
Rain. Swell. Do I have a waterproof jacket or an umbrella? No.
I am having a really hard time with getting to sleep here. Partly the time difference, partly the strange place.
I have no obligations today until a reception this evening, so I'm tempted to stay in my room and work, but I know the sales folks are really grateful when I'm in the booth in the exhibits. Time to get my brain jumpstarted out of this grey drowse and find a way to get over there in a somewhat dry condition.
hotel room. as usual, comically high desk requiring pillow to make it vaguely less ergonomically wrong wrong wrong. later figured out how to raise the chair which helped, but meant the pillow should go under the feet.
Tea Time 2006
Someone (Megan from notmartha maybe? Hmm, no, maybe it was in Selva's flickrstream) mentioned liking Adagio Teas and enjoying their link rewards program. I'm don't know yet what the tea tastes like, but it sure sounds good and if it's even half as tasty as their website design, I'm sure it's worth checking out.
First on my list to try would be Cha Cha:
Much like the Cuban dance for which it is named, famous for its three quick steps ("cha-cha-cha"), Cha Cha deliciously mingles soothing Chamomile, refreshing Peppermint and zesty Lemongrass into a wonderful herbal concoction sure to send your taste buds dancing with delight.
I bet Silver Needle is good too. I've had white teas that were stunning; a zen garden on your tongue.
And in the category of "household items to covet" I give you the Wagenfeld teapot. Ooo, sexy.
32 stories above San Antonio 2006
I'm in a hotel recovering from another day of conference and my feet, now that I've been sitting awhile, are no longer going *throb* *throb* *throb*. My tray from room service is helping too - enchiladas & a margarita.
- no wifi so I can't be online and on the bed. Boo, Marriott.
*G, check out the mod girl hugging her Huggy Bear album.
Groggy grey San Antonio 2006
The blueish tinge is entirely an artifact of my camera's color bias. The sky is grey and I'm having a hell of a time waking up today.
Too many short nights this week and the time difference partly to blame, but even 9 hours sleep didn't set me to rights. Ugh. At least I didn't have any morning obligations today.
