It's sad about the independent 2000
It's sad about the independent bookstores (like mine) going out of business, but I assure you Crown and Costco were already hurting them when Borders and Barnes & Noble came along. Amazon just compounded the effect. Really, I vastly prefer to shop at Amazon when I can't get to our local independent bookseller (Printers Inc in Mountain View). Barnes & Noble, last I heard, had only 35 buyers nationwide; if they don't like your book, what are your odds of reaching a reader? Whereas, Amazon, with its infinite shelf space, can stock everything and give the books with very small print runs as good a chance of being found as anything else. It is theoretically possible for Amazon or some other online retailer to help revive book arts and allow for the creation, on demand, of beautiful hand-bound editions.
