Wow, pb. Not only am 2000

Wow, pb. Not only am I not watching the super bowl or its accompanying advertising today, I totally forgot about the existence of football for at least the last 16 hours, maybe longer.

It's sad about the independent 2000

It's sad about the independent bookstores (like mine) going out of business, but I assure you Crown and Costco were already hurting them when Borders and Barnes & Noble came along. Amazon just compounded the effect. Really, I vastly prefer to shop at Amazon when I can't get to our local independent bookseller (Printers Inc in Mountain View). Barnes & Noble, last I heard, had only 35 buyers nationwide; if they don't like your book, what are your odds of reaching a reader? Whereas, Amazon, with its infinite shelf space, can stock everything and give the books with very small print runs as good a chance of being found as anything else. It is theoretically possible for Amazon or some other online retailer to help revive book arts and allow for the creation, on demand, of beautiful hand-bound editions.

My grandmother kicks my ass. 2000

My grandmother kicks my ass.

Yesterday my mother wrote:

Susie & Muriel spent some time out on the front deck in the afternoon, enjoying sunshine & conversation. Muriel brought out her jumprope and skipped rope for a while (if today was typical, she gets about 6 to 10 skips before she misses, only
1 or 2 on "hot peppers", but she can do several little series without stopping to rest. I don't think I could do as well...)

Me either, Mum. We'll just stand over here on the sidelines while the 85 year old shows us how it's done.

Boy, I love keeping up 2000

Boy, I love keeping up with my friends. Blogs are so cool. And the amazing detail we learn about each other? Incredible! Some people might think hearing what's in Paul's stomach today is gross, but I'm filled with a happy warm feeling. Oh, wait, that's jealousy - I had bagels for breakfast and bagels for lunch. And a Met-RX bar to keep me from swooning in the afternoon. A nice bowl of minestrone soup sounds pretty damn good. Dang telecommuters with their kitchens and cds and couches and cats. Cubeland sucks.

Paul is my favorite photographer 2000

Paul is my favorite photographer these days. Today he has beautiful cats.

Though it's a happy picture, it makes me think sad thoughts: in the past few days I have seen two cats dead by the side of the road at almost the same spot along El Camino. These were big beautiful, healthy looking pets, not strays. Please, folks, if you don't live in the country and you have a cat, keep it inside. Screw that crap about "providing a natural lifestyle". Most of us don't live in natural places, so protect your pet by letting it live in a safe place - inside.

Woo. Getting a littly blurgy 2000

Woo. Getting a littly blurgy here after too many hours in front of the computer. Time for a nice hot bath, I think. Edmond gave me some nice smelling bath stuff for [insert midwinter festival here] and it's calling my name.

By the way, yes, I do confirm Edmond's assertion to have gotten in shape. When the gal that sees you every night sits up in bed to watch you get undressed, I think you can consider yourself successful. Now it's my turn to get in shape. Hoo boy. At least I weigh less than Edmond, but not by much...

Well, Jason, I don't know 2000

Well, Jason, I don't know about you, but unlike Republican state Senator Tom King, I am rather partial to "the showing of covered male genitals in a discernibly turgid state." (Note for funseekers: discerniblyturgid.com is still available)

Fun is to be had 2000

Fun is to be had in my neck of the woods this Friday night. What movie shall we see? And what shall we eat before the movie?

If you'll be in the San Jose/Sunnyvale/Palo Alto area and want to join in, vote in the polls linked above and drop me a note.

I have a nice car. 2000

I have a nice car. It's a 1997 Saturn SL2, a comfortable 4 door sedan with an astounding trunk capacity. It's got just under 57,000 miles on it and it's had all it's services. I like it. Good seats, CD player, attractive green color. It is, as I said, a nice car. I'm selling it. I'm getting a company car. Anyone want to buy a Saturn?

I worked an awful lot 2000

I worked an awful lot of hours this past week. I was super tired last night, though not mentally devastated thanks to a visit to Watercourse Way for some hot tubbing. Went to bed kind of late last night. Got up for a 9am conference call (Silicon Valley Saturday morning fun). After the call I puttered around more vaguely than usual for about half an hour and finally realized I was just fooling myself and went back to bed. I thought I would sleep for a couple hours. I slept for over 4. whoa. Must have needed it. Had some very cool dreams including one in which my boss Clemens and I jumped off a mile high cliff down a waterfall. We came through just fine which I think bodes well for the coming year for SoftDevices.

Jake's Ev as John Travolta 2000

Jake's Ev as John Travolta is going to give me nightmares wherein the digerati appear in a special spin-off Saturday morning cartoon show as baby versions of themselves with giant heads and squeaky voices. Baby Owen is a particularly unsettling concept. I think it's the beard on a 4 year old that really gives me the heebie jeebies.

Jason is right. His new 2000

Jason is right. His new cam feature is really super keen. (Warning: He says it works in IE4+ on the PC only, so far).

Say, isn't he an up and coming, brash young weblogger scheduled to speak at SXSW this year? Now I definitely gotta go. (And if I do go, can I be on the blog panel too? I'll wear my MetaGrrrl feety pajamas. Or not. Your choice).

Edmond says that the coot 2000

Edmond says that the coot came out of his hole and saw his shadow, so we have 6 more weeks of rain. "You know, the coot that comes out of his hole on Martin Luther King Jr. Day and looks around? You've never heard of this?"

It's the straight face he maintains during this that really makes me confused. Especially on a groggy Tuesday morning after working a 12 hour day. "Um, yes, the coot. Of course."

pb is a good friend. 2000

pb is a good friend. He reminded me to read Dr. King's speeches, especially his last speech: "I've been to the Mountaintop".

One thing that stood out to me was:

It is no longer a choice between violence and nonviolence in this world; it's nonviolence or nonexistence.

It's true. And especially true if you include violence against nature, against the Earth. We are erasing ourselves, slowly and painfully, into gray plastic dust.

Blog (noun) A weblog or similar brief journal usually containing links and commentary thereon. Term coined by Peter Merholz.

Visit Typepad or Blogger to start your own. (I began with hand coding, then switched to Blogger when it first became available, then to Movable Type when I wanted more control over my weblog and to have it hosted at a place of my choosing (Hurricane Electric). Since 06/2003 I've used Typepad, a hosted service built by the same folks who made Movable Type, which I love because I don't have to maintain the underlying system).
